Houston, TX – On Tuesday, November 11, 2014, the City of Houston will show support for our Armed Forces and celebrate the annual “Houston Salutes American Heroes” Veterans Day Celebration. Mayor Annise D. Parker welcomes returning sponsors AT&T, Walgreens, and H-E-B.

“It is always an honor to recognize our local heroes with this extraordinary parade – every year it’s such a source of inspiration and patriotic pride,” said Mayor Annise Parker.  “The City of Houston continues to make it a priority to help these men and women resume a productive civilian life following their service to our great nation. Through our corporate partners AT&T, Walgreens, and H-E-B, we are able to provide these service members with promising opportunities to join Houston’s work force.”

The annual “Houston Salutes American Heroes” festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with the AT&T Veterans Job & Resource Fair and Walgreens Veterans Health Fair which is open until 1 p.m.

“AT&T is proud to join Mayor Parker and the City of Houston in supporting the men and women whose sacrifices for our country and freedom are made each and every day.  This initiative provides another avenue for AT&T's own ongoing commitment to support active duty military personnel and veterans, as well as their families," said Alice Aanstoos, regional vice president of AT&T, Houston.

Walgreens will provide flu shots and on-site health screenings including: blood glucose testing, bone density, blood pressure readings, diabetic foot exams, and Body Mass Index exams.  They will also be providing information regarding Medicare D Open Enrollment and Affordable Care Act Enrollment.

“Walgreens is proud to serve as a health care resource for our military men and women, veterans, and their families on Veterans Day and every day,” said Stephen Johnson, Walgreens Market Vice President.  “As one of the city’s most accessible, trusted providers of health, wellbeing, and beauty, we are committed to offering the tools and information to help and support our nation’s hero’s right to be happy and healthy.”

The ceremony will be held on the steps of City Hall at 10:00 a.m., ending with a Moment of Silence in memory of the WWI signing of the Armistice. The American Heroes Parade, sponsored by H-E-B, will begin at 11:30 p.m. at Lamar and Bagby, proceeding north on Smith, east on Walker, south on Louisiana and ending at Dallas.

“We are thankful for the commitment shown by the brave members of the armed forces and their families who have sacrificed so much for the freedom of our country,” said Cyndy Garza Roberts, Public Affairs Director,   H-E-B Houston. “Every day at H-E-B, we work alongside Partners (employees) and assist customers who currently serve or who have previously served in the military making it an exceptional honor to sponsor this remarkable showcase of community support.”

Houston is home to more than 200,000 military veterans, with over 300,000 living in the metropolitan area. Our community is comprised of veterans of WWII, the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan, and every conflict and peacetime era in between. In 2013, USAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes named Houston as the number one city in the United States for veterans, because of the city’s strong economy, affordability and plentiful resources for former service members.

Houston is one of the largest providers of men and women who join the military as well as one of the larger destination cities that exiting military members chose to start the next phase of their lives.  “Our office is proud to work directly with our veterans and their family members, as well as the many organizations in the community providing valuable services for our heroes,” said Carl Salazar Director, City of Houston Office of Veterans Affairs.

Bill Balleza, USMC Veteran and television anchor will emcee the 10:00 a.m. ceremony. The event is produced by the Mayor’s Office of Special Events and sponsored by AT&T, H-E-B, Walgreens, FMC Technologies, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, KTRK-ABC13, Cox Media Group, The Houston Chronicle, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Houston Department of Veterans Affairs, Houston Department of Health and Human Services, and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.
