The Alley Theatre's massive $46.5 million renovation is on budget and on schedule for the theater to reopen for the fall season.
The theater's first event is a gala fundraiser Sept. 19. The season will open Oct. 2 with the comedy "One Man, Two Guvnors."
The project, which began in July, is the building's first major overhaul since it opened in 1968. The company has spent its 2014-15 season at the University of Houston's Wortham Theatre.
About 75 percent of the work is finished, said managing director Dean Gladden, who offered a sneak peek at the renovations. Key improvements include the addition of a four-story fly loft above the Hubbard Stage, allowing scenery and equipment to be suspended out of the audience's view; and an extensive traps system under the stage floor, so set pieces and performers can rise or descend.
The renovation is also doubling bathroom facilities.
