Press Release | SHERYL CROW AND MARTINA MCBRIDE HEAD TO HOUSTON FOR JULY 4TH CELEBRATION
April 09, 2013
Fireworks will ignite the Houston sky and an array of diverse music will set the stage for an extraordinary patriotic celebration at the City of Houston’s official Fourth of July event, Southwest Airlines Freedom Over Texas featuring 9-time GRAMMY Award winner Sheryl Crow and Martina McBride presented by NRG, scheduled for Thursday, July 4 from 4 – 10 p.m.
“Celebrating the birth of our nation and reflecting upon those brave men and women who have made great sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy is important for us as Americans,” said Mayor Annise D. Parker. “Thanks to Featured Artists Sponsor, NRG, this year our annual July Fourth Celebration will feature two extraordinarily talented GRAMMY Award winning artists.”
“NRG is thrilled to bring world class artists, Sheryl Crow and Martina McBride to this family tradition,” said Karen Jones, NRG Chief Marketing Officer. “We are proud to sponsor this community celebration to say thank you to our customers living in the great state of Texas.”
Freedom Stage featured artists, Crow and McBride, will showcase their talents and wow Houston crowds with songs from the past and present. Martina McBride will take the stage first followed by her friend and occasional duet partner, Sheryl Crow.
Since the release of her seven-time Platinum, GRAMMY award-winning debut, Tuesday Night Music Club, Sheryl Crow has performed duets with musical luminaries such as Sting and Mick Jagger, released seven studio albums, (each charting Top 10, four of them platinum-plus), a quadruple-platinum greatest hits collection, and a Christmas album. She has also been nominated for an additional 27 GRAMMYs, her most recent for 2008’s critically acclaimed Detours. Crow launched her very own clothing line, Bootheel Trading Co., is a cancer survivor, has performed for President Obama and is a passionate supporter of a variety of environmental and health-related charities, including the NRDC, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and The World Food Program. Crow has sold more than 35 million records worldwide. Her current single “Easy” is currently Top 40 on the Billboard Hot Country Chart and climbing.
One of the most spectacular voices in any genre of music, Martina McBride has sold more than 18 million in album sales and six #1 hit songs. Her first album on Republic Nashville, ELEVEN, includes 11 new tracks, six of which she co-penned. The project produced “Marry Me,” featuring Train’s Pat Monahan, and her 25th career Top 10 single, “I’m Gonna Love You Through It.” In celebration of the new album, Martina launched "ELEVEN Across America Powered by Amtrak," a four-day train ride with 11 stops across the nation. Martina is the “most played female artist on country radio for the past 11 years,” according to both Mediabase and Broadcast Data Systems (BDS). The breadth of her talents – as recording artist, producer, songwriter, and concert entertainer – has made her an in-demand performer and personality. Among her hits are such empowering songs as "Independence Day," "This One's for the Girls," and "A Broken Wing," all of which have underscored her incredible popularity as one of music's preeminent female vocalists.
Throughout the day there will be local music from a variety of Houston’s best known bands and a few surprise national acts at the main Freedom Stage. KBR Liberty Park will conduct on-site recruiting and showcase military artifacts and vehicles from all five military branches. Patrons will be able to make donations to H.O.T. (Honoring Our Troops) and send a care packet overseas. The Bud Light Zone will showcase the All American Beer Garden and offer a prime view of the ninth annual Bud Light Texas Volleyball Championship Series Finals. More than 30,000 square feet of free educational and entertainment programming will be available for children of all ages in the Walmart All-American Kids Zone. Southwest Airlines will host the Southwest Airlines VIP Hangar and the Sky Stage featuring vintage aircraft from the Lonestar Flight Museum that will make fly-overs throughout the festival. In the Family Fitness Challenge Area, activities will be provided by all five of Houston’s hometown professional sports teams including the Houston Aeros, Houston Astros, Houston Dynamo, Houston Rockets, and Houston Texans.
In keeping with last year’s theme, Southwest Airlines Freedom Over Texas with Entertainment presented by NRG will further expand the availability of recycling receptacles to make it easier for attendees to recycle. The City of Houston is committed to supporting green initiatives and promoting sustainability.
