Press Release | TIME MAGAZINE COVER HEROES TO BE RECOGNIZED AT SAN LUIS SALUTE

February 09, 2015

Glitz and glamour will reign on Friday, February 13 at Galveston’s largest Mardi Gras gala. Paige and Tilman Fertitta’s 19th Annual San Luis Salute will pay tribute to seven extraordinary individuals who were recently recognized as TIME magazine covers.

In December, TIME magazine’s “2014 Person of the Year” cover recognized and named the UTMB Ebola fighters among the heroes. The team of Ebola doctors includes Dr. Thomas Geisbert, Dr. Alan Barrett, Dr. Thomas Ksiazek, Dr. James Le Duc and Dr. Scott Weaver. This month, NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly was the featured cover, chronicling his planned March mission to space where he will spend one year aboard the space station, setting a single-mission record for a U.S. astronaut.

All proceeds from the San Luis Salute will benefit the National Biocontainment Training Center at the Galveston National Laboratory at UTMB. UTMB is one of the world’s leading venues for the study of and development of solutions to the global challenge of infectious disease, anchored by the Galveston National Laboratory (the only national laboratory of any kind in Texas).

Once again, the San Luis Salute is a total sell out with over 1,500 tickets purchased before the invitations even went to print. Check it out – it’s the hottest ticket in town!
